I Have Encountered Fraud on My Credit Cards in Last 2 Weeks

December 4th, 2011

I wanted to share a story with you that has actually got me in somewhat of a state of shock.

I have actually encountered fraud on my credit cards in the last 2 weeks.

The first time was on my Bank of America Credit Card. I got a call on my iPhone and took it and it left a message that I needed to call a number and that fraud was suspected on my credit card.

The problem is they did not tell me on which credit card as I have 2 of them that are open through Bank of America. So I call the number and it sounded like I was talking to someone on a used car lot. The guy said it was fraud protection though and started to ask me personal information they needed to verify things. At least that is what they told me.

I was uncomfortable giving them my personal information as how did I know they worked with Bank of America online fraud protection? So I got on the phone with the actual Bank of America contact number from the website.

This always seems to take forever to get a real person that can help you. But I finally did and they told me my credit card was fraud protected and they would close it down after verifying with me that charges were being made from a foreign country outside of the U.S.

Actually I was very relieved that they had called me that quickly. So my account was shut down and they issued me a new card which I still have not received, but I do have allot of mail I still need to sort through.

Ok, now for the second surprise pertaining to my credit cards. Since I did not have my Bank of American credit card to use, I decided to get out my Citi credit card that I had not used for awhile. It actually is a great credit card with lots of good benefits.

So I started using this credit card and went out to a couple of restaurants and hit it with some various other minor charges.

About 2 weeks later I notice I had two text messages on my iPhone as well as a couple actual calls. I thought it looked weird and the text message had the words fraud protection but it was for Citi.

I called the number on my credit card and started talking to this very nice lady who took me through everything and all the charges that were now being made on this credit card by some crook in England.

They had racked up over $1000 in one day. I mean they charged McDonald’s, went by the Levi clothing store and a number of other places.

I was extremely aggravated as to how this is happening and how it could be on two completely different credit cards with two issuers within 2 weeks.

The lady from Citi told me that someone has software and is getting into the terminals and downloading credit card numbers. They then go out and use them as if they were their card. They apparently get a card and are swiping them half way around the world.

Citi sent me an email with the fraudulent charges and I had to do an electronic signature and send the paperwork back. They are now closing that card and have already UPS the new credit card to me overnight. Wow, now that is service.

I need to check back with them to make sure all charges are dropped since this card is fraud protected.

This is one of the nice things about using credit cards for your transactions is the fact that if fraud does occur you are not responsible as well as the credit card issuers having some pretty sophisticated methods of detecting and protecting their customers when fraud does occur.

My only problem is that it was so quick right after it had just happened to me. It sounds like the problem is rampant and that this is happening more often and whatever this software is that the crooks have it is working well and that the credit card companies need to get a more secure system so that these credit card numbers do not get compromised.

I though I would give you this insight and tell you my experience since others may be effected.
