The Best Credit Card Benefits Can Be Yours

May 30th, 2011

No longer the exception they once were, a credit card has now become a necessity. Making reservations are nearly impossible without one whether you want to book an airline flight or a room at a hotel. If you find yourself applying for the first time, getting the best credit card benefits is a major plus.

The best rates are offered to those with the best payment history’s. Yet even one with a not so good rating can hope to reestablish it with a charge account. Offers are always forthcoming in the mail and even by computer. Some offers are worth taking advantage of while others are not.

Many financial institutions offer the 0% introductory payment plan. This is a great benefit to those who pay off any outstanding balance each month or within the introductory period that can last from six to fifteen months. Beware of the banks that follow this up with a higher than average interest rate. For some this could make the payment difficult to meet.

Reward programs are another initiative that is often offered. The more you spend, the more points you get. Again, if you can afford to pay off your debt quickly, there can be a lot of benefit to this program, otherwise proceed with caution. Many people are foolish enough to spend more than they should just to get the points.

Some banks and creditors charge an annual fee for being a member. Always refuse to pay this money and most creditors will refund the charge especially if you have any outstanding balance. If they refuse to reimburse you the annual fee, take your business elsewhere.

Not all people handle their accounts responsibly. If this has been a problem in the past, then using a charge card is not for you. Creditors will charge fees for late payments and also for exceeding your spending limit. If this should happen to you and you are hit with a high interest rate, you have the option of ‘opting out.’ This allows you to have your account closed with the lower rate and you continue to make payments until the account is paid in full.

Reward offers and introductory 0% interest rates are not bad things in themselves. They only apply for limited periods of time and that could be long enough to get yourself into a large amount of debt. If you have a good payment history and are offered a card at a permanent low rate; you may be better off passing up all the incentives.

There are some credit card benefits you should know about. Just take a look at the best credit cards out there right now.
