The Best Ways To Build Credit: How Credit Cards Can Help

If you are out trying to establish credit for the first time or trying to build up good credit after a bit of a credit mishap, you may be noticing it's not the easiest thing to do. Both people with no credit and bad credit often find themselves in a situation where no one wants to take them on as a credit risk because of their questionable credit history, or lack of it. Here are some ways to get your credit going in the right direction.

Student Credit Cards

If you are a high school or college student who has no credit under your belt, a student credit card may be a great way to start building your credit history. Plenty of companies offer student credit cards. Many colleges also offer college credit cards for their students to show off. These are low limit credit cards that will let you buy what you need, all the while establishing credit.

Prepaid Credit Cards

If you have a little cash on hand, you may want to try a prepaid credit card. These are cards that you 'charge' with a cash payment and then use the card until that amount has been spent.  While this sounds a lot like having an ATM card, the charges on this account still go through the credit card companies and count positively on your credit record.

Bad Credit Credit Cards

For those who are too high of a credit risk for most credit companies there is a special industry of bad credit credit cards that will still allow you to have that coveted piece of plastic. The catch with these cards is the interest rates are much higher than typical cards will charge.

Once You Get a Card

After you get a credit card it is important to be responsible with it in order to build credit.  Credit cards are a great way to increase your credit rating or build a credit record as each of your charges and payments will show up on your credit record. The longer you have a positive relationship going with a credit card company, the better your credit rating will be. So, remember:

Watch Your Charges

The key to using a credit card to build your credit is to use it responsibly. Make sure you know just how much is on your card at all times and don't charge it to a point where you will have a tough time making your payments

Pay Your Bills

When the bills come in, make sure to pay at least the minimum amount every month, preferably more. The more you can pay off of your principal each month, the less you will be hit with interest charges.

Pay On Time

Always make sure to pay your credit card bill on time. It only takes one late payment to get a negative ding on your credit report, which will take a long time to clear away.

While many people think credit cards are something that always gets you into financial trouble, they also can be a great way to build your credit as long as you use them wisely and responsibly.
