Know Your Credit Score to Know What Type of Credit Card You Can Get

If you are in the market for a new credit card, you need to know more than just what card you want. You also need to know what kind of card you will be able to get.

Just because you get a credit card offer in the mail doesn't mean you will automatically get the credit card they are offering. You will have to wait and see what the credit card company finds in your credit history.

You could choose to just wait and see what they say or you could be a little more proactive and know what is in your credit history, and if it's not so great, work on making it better so you can get the credit card you want.

In the past few years there have been some changes to the way credit scores are counted. So, even if you thought you knew what your credit score was a year or two ago, you should probably take the time to look into it again so you know what it says now.

If your credit is not where you want it you have only two things to do – get a bad credit credit card for now and work to be able to get a better credit card later.

Bad credit credit cards are cards that those who do not qualify for regular credit cards can get. They have higher interest rates than regular credit cards, but also are a way to be able to have a card until your credit gets better.

First you have to figure out how your credit went bad. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Late Payments – Just one to two late payments on any of your credit cards is enough to put a major ding on your credit history for a couple of years. Generally, any dings you have take two years to remove.

Too Many Accounts – If you are one of those people that would keep taking new department store credit cards because they offered you a major discount on your first purchase, it's time to close some of those cards. Too many open lines of credit make you seem like a larger risk and can make credit companies leery of you.

While you will have to start to recover your credit with bad credit credit cards, as long as you keep your credit on the up and up, and clean up any problems, in no time you will be getting offers for plenty of rewards credit cards that you will be able to apply for and be approved!
